Boarding Fido During Your Holiday

With summertime quickly upon us, we are all making plans to take some sort of holiday vacation. We can easily strap the kids in and take them along, but what about Fido? Just like a child, he can't be left unsupervised and chances are he won't be hanging out at Grandma's house. So we wanted to bring you a little insight to boarding your pooch.

Rugby - pretty stoked to be home!

For many first time pet parents, and for new pets in the home, this can be an anxiety-ridden decision. Where do you leave your pet? How do you know it's the best place? Is it affordable? Will they care for them like you do? The answer should be yes!

We recently left our handsome hound Rugby at Midtown Groom and Board for a whopping 6 nights - which we felt worse about than he did. In fact, when we arrived to fetch him, he pulled back a little to say bye to the friendly staff.

During the month of June, we're bringing you three articles by local dog boarders in different areas of town. And, we know these three personally and they are all phenomenal! So stay tuned...

Give Your Pet a Little Holiday While You're Away

When pet parents begin researching a boarding facility, they should keep in mind their personality and behavioral traits. Austin offers a wide variety of different types of boarding and pet sitting services so you want to make sure you find the right facility for your pup. When you begin the search, make sure you ask a lot of questions. Things like "how tall are your fences," "where will my dog be during the day/night," "how much time will he spend outside," "can you administer medicine;" are all good things to consider.

At Midtown, the premise of our boarding is activity. And because we are a small boarding facility, your pet will receive individualized attention and gentle care.

By day, your pup is provided with ample play time and exercise. Each dog is matched with animals of similar size and temperament. From social butterflies to wallflowers, we can arrange play groups and private play according to your pet's preference.

Each dog is provided with a private client in our climate controlled boarding room. We provide soft, fleece linens and fresh water for all our canine guests, along with relaxing spa music in the evenings to lull them to sleep after a long day on the playground.

Clients have the option of customizing their pet's experience to make their visit a special, individualized, and unforgettable stay. With a la carte options ranging from neighborhood hikes and frozen yogurt snacks to pawparazzi coverage and canine massage, you will be able to rest assured that your pet is having just as much fun on his vacation as you are on yours!

At Midtown we require: Rabies, Bordetella and DHPP. All pets must be spayed/neutered. An evaluation night is required prior to any boarding stay to ensure the happiness of your pet while you're away.

Research Your Boarding Facility - You'll Relax Much Better While You're Away!

Boarding your dog at any type of dog boarding facility can be extremely stressful for both your and your pet. The summer months are some of the busiest for dog boarding facilities due to the large amount of traveling done at this time. A few simple rules can make sure that you leave your dog with the right type of dog boarding facility. This information will help make your travel time worry free and make your pet's boarding experience stress free.

What type of dog do you have? A friendly with other dogs, playful dog or and older dog who wants to sleep most of their days away? There are many types of boarding facilities out there. Some which allow play time multiple times during the day to all day play and others which only allow a couple of short individual walks outside daily. It is up to the consumer to do the leg work and to check out these facilities on their own to determine which one is the right fit for their pet.

First, call around to facilities in your area. Find out what services each one of them offers and which ones sound like the best fit for your family pet. Does the facility require the dog to be spayed or neutered? What vaccinations are required to bring your dog to board overnight? If your dog requires medications, this might be something you would inquire about too. Does the staff administer medications? If so are these services at an extra cost? Some facilities require only friendly dogs that can play well with other dogs. Other facilities have the option of being able to take dogs out individually.

Second, once you have narrowed down your search, I would recommend touring some of these facilities. The best facilities are the ones that you can just show up to, unannounced, and they take you for a tour of their entire facility. Have an open mind during these tours. Most facilities smell like dogs and not like your own home environment. Expect dogs to be barking as most of the time during your visit as these dogs are only use to the staff being in the back, not strangers. Make sure the facilities you are touring have enough staff working during your visit. A good rule of thumb is 1 staff member per 30 dogs. Make sure the place doesn’t smell of fecal matter or urine. Look around, do dogs look comfortable with water and blankets or are there a lot of messes around? You want to make sure, to the best of your ability, that the facility is doing exactly what they say they are doing. This leg work is totally up to you.

Next, once you have narrowed down a couple of facilities, bring your vaccination history into the facilities and talk to someone about boarding your pet. Tell them about any concerns you may have regarding your pet and listen to their feedback. Most places will be honest with a future customer in regards to whether or not they think the facility is a good fit for your dog. If they offer a daycare program, make a reservation for your dog to try out the facilities as a test run before you leave them for overnight boarding. This way the dog is familiar with their surroundings prior to drop off. Find out what the facilities allow in the kennel with the dog overnight. Can you bring your own bedding, bowls and treats? These questions should help you finalize a place that you feel is a comfortable match for both you and your pet.

Finally, make a reservation for your pet. Make sure the facility you have chosen has ALL of the information they need in regards to care of your pet. Has your dog had a history of seizures but hasn’t had them in 4 years? Maybe something you might want to mention in case something happens while you are out of town. Make sure to leave a credit card number with your vet hospital AND local emergency vet in case something happens while you are away. This is especially helpful if you are out of the country or somewhere where your availability is limited. Having a family friend in town to make decisions for you as a contact person is also very helpful.

Making sure to do your own research in regards to boarding facilities always makes for a better time while on any type of trip. Your pet will have a fun and safe environment to play while you have a relaxing trip away. It may seem like a lot of leg work prior to going away, but now you have found a facility that you can use over and over while away and feel totally comfortable with while your pet is in their care.

Boarding, Fun, and The Social Media Pup Stars!!

Edward Flores, Owner,  Mud Puppies

Boarding your dog for the first time can be stressful for the whole family, but most of the time--let's be honest, it's much more difficult for the pet parents to let go--even for one night.

Austin is a great city for dogs, because you have so many options to choose from for boarding or playcare needs. But, Mud Puppies is fast becoming Austin's favorite dog boarding, playcare, grooming, dog wash, and training facility! We are extremely proud to have been named 2011 Best Pet Service by the readers of the Austin Chronicle, 2011 Best Boarding Facility, and 2010 Best Grooming Salon by the Austin Pets Directory!

With over 2,400 Facebook fans, your dog will be in the spotlight when visiting for boarding or playcare! We have uploaded over 11,000 pictures to our Facebook page, so it's safe to say you will see your dog in one of our many albums! How could you not love that?! WE DO!

Should you decide to join our family, there are a few things you'll want to know. At Mud Puppies all dogs who come for boarding or playcare must go through a playcare orientation. We give all of our dogs about 3-5 hrs of group playtime a day, so safety is our top priority. We want to make sure your dog, other dogs, and the Mud Puppies staff are safe while your dog is in our care. During the orientation we introduce your dog to different dogs, different sizes, and different temperaments to see what group they will fit in with the most. Whether your dog loves to romp around non-stop, play just the right amount of time, or just chill & relax with his new friends, we are the right place for your family!

On their orientation we also want to see how your dog reacts when left alone in their bunk--we do not use cages or crates. Our bunks are the about the size of a crate, but with three walls and a door. Our goal is to make sure our dogs don't suffer from separation anxiety, and possibly hurt themselves by attempting to get out of their bunk. We also require all of our dogs to be up to date on their Rabies, DHLPP, and Bordetella vaccinations. We will need a copy of your most up-to-date shot records from your veterinarian to keep in your pet's file.

We always get the question, what should/can I bring during my dog's boarding stay?? Our ultimate goal is to make your dog feel at home. So, while we are happy to provide nutritious food during their stay, we recommend you bring their regular food and treats from home. We do not want to give your dog an upset tummy while they're with us, so keeping them on their food is best. You might want to bring a few of their favorite toys from home as well. If they sleep on a dog bed, mat, or a favorite blanket, feel free to bring that along too. At Mud Puppies we sell "Molly Mutt" Dog Beds in our retail area. Many of our clients love these beds, because you can stuff them with old towels, blankets, or your old clothes. The best part is all of these items have your and their scent on them. That truly makes them feel like they are at home. We even tell our clients to bring the shirt they wore to bed the night before, so their mom or dad's scent is very close to them when sleeping away from home.

It's an understatement to say that we love dogs at Mud Puppies! But, we want you to see for yourself. Make sure to take a tour of our facility--we are open to the public Monday-Friday from 7am-7pm, Saturday from 8am-6pm, and Sunday from 11am-5pm. Come in for a tour anytime- no appointment necessary.

Happy National Mutt Day!

Rugby, Eddie, and I would like to wish everyone a very Happy National Mutt Day! As proud owners of one of the best mutts ever, we salute all of you who are mutt owners & lovers too!
